As the EU undertakes a major step towards regulating the area of artificial intelligence, this talk will look at the far-reaching implications of the bloc’s proposed new Artificial Intelligence Act. The Act will place outright bans on the use of A.I. for certain purposes, as well as compelling organisations to apply a risk framework to the assessment of A.I. technologies.
Additionally, it will see the reach of the EU’s regulatory powers widening with a new Artificial Intelligence Board being created, and fines potentially higher than those under the EU GDPR being levied.
With extra-territorial provisions applying, this Act will have wide-ranging consequences for developers of A.I globally, and, most especially, for the way in which personal data is processed via algorithms and machine learning.
It’s a bold move by the EU – but will it pay off?
