The EU Web Accessibility Directive was signed into Irish law on 23 September 2020 and requires that public bodies ensure their websites and mobile apps comply with internationally recognised accessibility standards.
The Irish Computer Society (ICS), in partnership with the National Disability Authority (NDA), is holding a series of 3 information seminars and 3 follow up training webinars on the Directive. The series is relevant to all public bodies, industry and disabled persons organisations and aims to build awareness of the Directive, the legal obligations in place on public bodies, and the standards that public websites and mobile apps must comply with. It also aims to provide practical advice on how you can improve accessibility of public sector websites and mobile apps and evaluate your own website.
Each information seminar is lead by experts in the field of accessibility and is then followed by a more in-depth training webinar provided by AbilityNet on the same topic.
You’re free to attend as many or as few sessions as you wish. These sessions may be suitable for IT professionals or communications professionals who manage company websites and apps. All sessions are FREE to attend for all.
Dónal Rice from the NDA said “Making websites and mobile apps accessible is vital for the inclusion of persons with disabilities. But it also helps create a culture in an organisation that promotes the inclusion of everyone regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. We call this Universal Design. These sessions will give you an introduction into this and the knowledge to review your own website.”
“Web accessibility – essential for some, useful for all” (W3C)
